Study on Batch Deep-hole Drilling Technology of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract To meet assembly requirements, carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) generally require mechanical processing, of which the most common form is drilling. As a result increasing quantity use and growing structural complexity CFRP, demand for batch high-precision hole making becoming increasingly urgent. However, existing research mostly focused on small-batch small-thickness drilling samples. With customized PCD drill bit, this study investigates effects large-batch failure forms bit quality holes drilled. The results show that (1) chip adhesion great importance to in process making; (2) fluid cutting facilitates cooling, lubrication, removal thereby dramatically reducing tool wear; (3) dry leads micro expansion so drilled have slightly larger diameter than bit; (4) addition support plates at exit position can effectively avoid defects such as tear delamination.

Drilling of Fiber-Reinforced Plastics - Tool Modeling and Defect Prediction

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have been steadily replacing metals as choice engineering materials for various applications. Although FRPs can be manufactured to near-net shape, post processing operations such as machining are required to create some features (such as holes). In order to drill holes efficiently with the least waste and defects, it is essential to understand the machi...

Characterization and Effects of Fiber Pull-Outs in Hole Quality of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics Composite

Hole quality plays a crucial role in the production of close-tolerance holes utilized in aircraft assembly. Through drilling experiments of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic composites (CFRP), this study investigates the impact of varying drilling feed and speed conditions on fiber pull-out geometries and resulting hole quality parameters. For this study, hole quality parameters include hole size...

Laser Ablation of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics: Laser-Ionization TOF Mass Spectrometric Study

Neutral fragments from a nanosecond KrF excimer laser-ablated carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP, carbon fiber/epoxy resin composite) were investigated by laser-ionization time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry in order to explore the laser ablation dynamics of CFRP. The neutrals were detected after the post-ionization by an ArF excimer laser pulse at variable delay times, td, relative to th...

Effect of chisel edge in ultrasonic assisted drilling of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP)

Ultrasonic assisted drilling (UAD) has been reported effective for thrust force reduction during drilling of CFRP resulting in lower exit delamination. However, this process is not fully understood in relation to machining theory. This work focused on understanding the separate effects of chisel and cutting edges during UAD in comparison with conventional drilling (CD). Experiments were perform...

Drilling of carbon fibre reinforced laminates – a study

The distinguishing characteristics of carbon fibre reinforced laminates, like low weight, high strength or stiffness, had resulted in an increase of their use during the last decades. Although parts are normally produced to “near-net” shape, machining operations like drilling are still needed. In result of composites non-homogeneity, this operation can lead to delamination, considered the most ...
